Holcombe Grammar School is a four form entry selective boys’ school that admits female students into its Sixth Form. It is housed in a campus of well-appointed buildings – with an additional four new classrooms being completed in the spring of 2016 – and is centred around the historic Holcombe Manor. All teaching spaces are furnished with interactive whiteboards and the school is well served by a number of media and ICT suites.
The school is relatively small in scale with 560 students in Years 7 to 11 and a further 240 in Sixth form, which, combined with the its vibrant House system, ensures that staff student relationships are highly positive. The school’s deserved long standing reputation as being a supportive and caring environment in which to teach and learn is mirrored by its students’ academic success. Recent years have witnessed significant and sustained developments in attainment with the school achieving its greatest ever examination results in the summer of 2015.
Extra-curricular activities, ranging from the Duke of Edinburgh programme to chess club, are both valued and well attended. The school has a rich history of sporting success with a particular strength in Football, having produced a number of professionals including premier league and England internationals. A fully refurbished sports hall and new fitness suite, available for staff as well as student use, will be opened in the early months of 2016.
As a member of the Thinking Schools Academy Trust the school is at the forefront of pedagogic practice. It places cognitive approaches at the heart of its provision and anticipates being formally accredited as a Thinking School by the University of Exeter in the summer of 2016. CGSB works closely with all of the Trust’s schools and has particular ties with New Horizon’s Children’s Academy which shares the school’s site.
